Tell us about yourself.
I’m originally from Delaware and have lived in D.C. for almost 20 years. I had a successful DJ night called She Rex for five years in Adam’s Morgan. I have a five-year-old and a 7-month-old kid. I will talk to anybody about comedy, horror, music, or women’s sports for far longer than they would like. I played field hockey in college and in adult leagues in D.C., so yes, that is my knees you hear creaking from a mile away.
What class do you usually attend?
I’m all over the map but I really love it when I can get to a 9 a.m. or noon class. The work-from-homers really bring the chit-chat.
How long have you been training at Second Wind CrossFit? and… why Second Wind CrossFit?
I started in the fall of 2016 because my workout buddy Sarah Katchpole joined and loved it. As the parent of young children, nothing has been better at strengthening all the neglected areas you don’t realize are instrumental in creating misery or mastery when lifting kids who will only get bigger. (Benjamin Buttoning only works in the movies.) I also like that I can walk to Second Wind; it’s got a real neighborhood vibe.
What has CrossFit done for you?
It has challenged me to make failure and trying scary things part of my routine. It has helped me set and realize goals. It has taken me out of the fugue state of 30/40-something workout routines that never seem to make a difference. It’s made me do something other than run. It has introduced me to a bunch of funny and smart people who also like to exercise.
Favorite lift, movement or workout?
I love to press and I’ve learned to love rowing. I like a long burn – Barbara or Murph.
Write a WOD.
5 rounds:
- Run 200
- 10 pistol squats
- 10 pike pushups
- 20 overhead plate lunges
- 20 sit-ups
What exercise makes you want to turn around and head home.
Overhead squats and or thrusters
What do you do when you’re not doing CrossFit?
Listen to true crime and comedy podcasts, watch women’s sports, work as the newsletters director at an education association, tend to two small children and a geriatric cat.
Favorite movie? Or what book did you just read?
Recently rewatched Silence of the Lambs and it was pure joy. I’ll Be Gone in the Dark by Michelle McNamara is a truly terrifying but lovingly crafted work of investigative writing.
Favorite song to WOD to? or… What song should we add to our playlist?
Orange Crush by R.E.M. or Standing in the Way of Control by the Gossip
Tell us something surprising about a you…
I went to Catholic school for 14 years. This surprises me, at least. Oh and I did stand-up, twice!
Biggest accomplishment in the gym?
Sub-8 (7:15) 2K row baby! That sentence is literal gibberish to anyone outside the gym.
